We Are Going Green!
Here at PJ’s Flowers we are taking every step possible to help the environment. Starting with recycling all of our paper as well as all cardboard, we estimate that we recycle over a ton of paper products a year. Since we have not been provided with recycling bins at our location we contribute cardboard to one of our vendors who recycles. Our paper products are taken home by staff and put into our personal recycling bins.
We are phasing out the use of any aerosol products that we can, further reducing waste and greenhouse gasses. We reuse all containers our customers return, and for our corporate clients, weddings, parties and standing orders we encourage the containers be a rental item. Additionally some of our containers are made from recycled materials, and at every opportunity we buy local. We incorporate organic fruit and vegetables as well as herbs in some bouquets. We also use a great deal of glass as it is less likely to be thrown away. We offer an incentive of the recipients to return containers they receive.
Periodically we have events that are so large that we end up with a surplus of flowers, when this occurs, we donate floral arrangements to local nursing homes and hospice. Our flowers deserve homes not trash cans.
We fuel all our vehicles before 9 a.m. or after 4 p.m. at every possible opportunity. In an effort to use less petroleum products we are now routing deliveries so we only go to each area of town 1 time each day unless we have an unexpected delivery, funeral, etc. We have also joined a delivery co-operative too maximize delivery efficiency.
We shut off 6 computers and 5 printers nightly as well as raising the temperature 5 degrees each night. We, unfortunately, can not make that higher due to the fact that we have perishable products in our showroom. We have also phased out the use of paper towels and are now using cloth, which we have cleaned on a weekly basis. These are labor costs that w are proud to incur.
Our staff regularly do everything anything they can in their personal lives as well. Most of our staff recycles at home as well. Our manager refuses to purchase a car, instead relies on mass transit, walking or carpools.
